140 DAYS, 3,000 KM, FROM THE BLUFF TO CAPE REINGA; TE ARAROA
"Ko au te whenua ko te whenua ko au" "I am the land and the land is me"
My name is Jenna-Rose and I am about to embark on a quest.
I am preparing to tackle one of the world's longest thru-hiking trails, New Zealand’s own: Te Araroa. From Bluff to Cape Reinga, this trail is a test of true character and determination.
I will not be walking the trail for its breath taking vista's and challenging terrain alone. Te Araroa opens up the pathways my ancestors carved deep into the crevasses of this land, rich with history and knowledge.
I am tāngata whenua (people of the land) or more commonly known as Māori. Our connections to the land define our identity, reflect our principles and shape the way we live.
The last two centuries have seen man-made environmental devastation wreak havoc on our earth and precious resources to a critical level.
I want to bring awareness to the importance of the land and our need to be an active part in it's sustainability. The land nurtures us and we should give back and care in return, if not for us but for the future generations.
This is my journey of reconnection, understanding and aspiration.
My journey begins on Thursday 5th January 2017 in the town of Taumaranui at the southern end of the Waikato - King Country region.
See Te Araroa for information on where I will be going and follow here Blog and Video for updates.
